Thank you for visiting. Please allow me to share some information about myself and my work.

I was born and raised in Alberta, Canada. My parents were refugees after the Second World War. They arrived in Canada with nothing but courage, will, and hope - qualities that are legacies for my sister, brother, and me. We are deeply indebted to them.

I completed pre-medical and medical school studies in Canada at the University of Alberta. I graduated from medical school, with distinction and first class standing, in 1979.

After medical school I completed my internship in Christchurch, New Zealand. It was a wonderful year that left me with a lifelong fondness for the people and the country. I spent the next year as a surgical resident in Bermuda, before returning to Canada for an additional year of training in primary care medicine. The subsequent years were spent practicing primary care medicine in remote areas of northern Canada and briefly in the rural midwest of the USA.

Eventually the interest that motivated my study of medicine was rekindled and I undertook training in psychiatry - completing my residency and fellowship at the University of Hawaii. I am board certified in general psychiatry, child and adolescent psychiatry, and also certified by the American Society of Addiction Medicine.

After completing psychiatry training, I spent several years engaged in doctoral level studies of depth psychology at the Pacifica Graduate Institute. In addition my research interests have focused on developing methods to facilitate the creative process. I have also been involved in the area of physician wellness and am certified as a Mindful Practice facilitator.

More recently I completed training in the emerging field of psychedelic medicine at the California Institute of Integral Studies. Engagement with this rapidly developing area has become a significant focus of my practice.

I have been in private practice in Honolulu since 1989. I am very grateful for my career in medicine. After four decades in a variety of practice settings, I remain deeply engaged in my work and thankful to the many patients who have placed their trust in me.

On a personal note, my wife Nicola and I have been married for over 40 years. She has been my love, companion, and partner through the joys and challenges of these years. We have two grown children - Zach who lives in New York City - and Brit who lives in Los Angeles.

I hope that this brief summary gives you some sense of who I am personally and professionally. For more information please explore the site by clicking on the “services” link above.

Thank you.
